What is a CSA?
Community-supported agriculture is an alternative, locally-based economic model of agriculture and food distribution where there is a partnership between community members and their farmer. Individuals pay a membership fee to participate with the farmer in a share of the harvest. In the fall members will pay their fee and the get to work building the shares (note: since this is a meat csa, we have already been raising the animals for quite some time). Beginning the week before Thanksgiving, members pickup their share monthly at either Gray Fox Farm in Hudson or at Heartland Beefalo in Canal Fulton.
Our Meat CSA
What’s in the share? The simple answer is we don’t really know yet. The shares will be made up based on the yield from various steers, hogs, and chickens. Each animal is different and unique and the amount and type of meat harvested from each animal is also different. Expect to see some ground Beefalo, and Sausage in each share each month. Chickens will be included as they are available. Our goal is to provide a wide assortment of cuts and meats each month. Some of the items we plan to include are: ham steaks, hamburgers, whole chicken, sausage, rib steak, strip steak, bacon, brisket, skirt steak, kabob, stew meat, pork chops, pork roast, and many more selections. Our goal is to provide each small basket with approximately $60 of meat which generally works out to 6-10 items. Large shares are targeted at $125 in value each month. Your share may be larger or smaller each month depending on what is included. For instance, if we include a 5# ham in a monthly share, you may receive fewer total items that month.
